How the VOL-VCA exam is structured

The VOL-VCA exam consists of 60 questions across four chapters, and most of it is about preparing and carrying out the work. The Stichting Samenwerken Voor Veiligheid (SSVV) manages the VCA system; you sit the exam at an exam centre recognised by the SSVV.

On 1 January 2026 the Dutch-language exams switched to new final attainment levels and assessment criteria (VCA-ETT 3.0), and the number of questions went from 70 to 60. Since 1 September 2026, version 3.1 of these criteria has applied.

A VCA VOL mock exam in 2026 should therefore be based on 60 questions and the new assessment criteria. That is how our ten sets are built.

22Questions on preparing, discussing and inspecting
20Questions on carrying out work activities
13Questions on controlling specific hazards
5Questions on incidents and emergencies

Tip: Chapters A and B together account for 42 of the 60 questions. If you're short on time, start with those topics.

Why VCA for supervisors is about applying knowledge

The exam mainly tests whether you can apply knowledge to a situation on the shop floor, not whether you know a definition by heart. Concepts such as flash point and explosive limits count as required prior knowledge: they aren't asked about separately, but without that knowledge you won't understand a question about fire and explosion.

As a supervisor you also get questions about your own role. Examples are the SHE tasks of the client, employer and operational supervisor, the points to cover in a toolbox meeting, or the moment a task risk analysis needs revising. Many candidates find questions with more than one correct answer difficult, as well as questions where two answers both sound reasonable.

In the training you come across situations like these again and again in different forms. After marking you read for each question why one answer fits better than another, for example on these topics.

  • Under the Working Conditions Act (Arbeidsomstandighedenwet) you tackle hazards at the source first, then with collective measures, and only as a last resort with personal protective equipment. If two measures would both help, the question is often about that order.
  • The Working Conditions Decree (Arbeidsomstandighedenbesluit) states that personal protective equipment is in principle intended for one person. If it does have to be shared, measures are needed to prevent health and hygiene problems.
  • An RI&E (risk inventory and evaluation) always includes an action plan and is updated when working methods or working conditions change.
  • Given a pictogram, label or safety data sheet of a hazardous substance, you must be able to determine the risks and the right measures.

Tip: With every situation question, first check who is acting: employer, employee or supervisor. The correct answer often depends on that role.

Why practising with explanations works better than reading the Working Conditions Act

By answering questions and seeing right away why your answer is right or wrong, you remember the rules in the form the exam asks about them. Reading legislation teaches you what it says. Practising teaches you to recognise it in a situation.

After every test, the error analysis by topic shows where you lose marks. If your scores for electricity and radiation keep falling below those for the workplace, you get extra practice on exactly that topic. Your dashboard shows how your strong and weak topics develop.

Still not quite following the explanation? Ask the AI tutor your own question. It answers based on the laws and official sources behind the exam, such as the Working Conditions Act, the Working Conditions Decree and the Working Conditions Regulation. You could ask, for instance, when a piece of work equipment needs re-inspecting after an accident or after a long time out of use.

Do your first set and within an hour you'll know where you stand.

Working towards your VCA VOL diploma

Following a fixed order gets the most out of the ten sets. If you'd like to see what the questions look like first, you can start with a free VCA VOL mock exam.

  1. 1First set in practice modeWork through the questions calmly and read the explanations, including for questions you got right. A correct answer often turns out to have been a guess.
  2. 2Review the error analysisFind out which topics cost you marks and do the extra practice on those topics.
  3. 3Ask the AI tutorIf a rule stays unclear, keep asking until you understand the reasoning.
  4. 4Move on to exam modeDo the next sets under the same time pressure as the real exam, so you get used to the pace.
  5. 5Consistently above 65%Our sets use 65%, so 39 out of 60 questions correct, slightly stricter than the official 64.5%. If you keep reaching that on sets that are new to you, you're well on your way.

How to approach the VOL VCA exam

On exam day, a consistent way of reading helps most. You take the exam digitally and read all the questions yourself, so it pays to have done that many times in exam mode.

You get your result straight after the exam. If you pass, you are entered in the Central Diploma Register (CDR) and your diploma is valid for 10 years; after that you sit the exam again.

  • Read the whole question before looking at the answers, and watch out for words like not, first or always.
  • With a question that has more than one correct answer, judge each answer on its own instead of looking for the single best one.
  • Don't get stuck on one difficult question, because every question counts towards your score.
  • In the days before your exam, do one more full set in exam mode and then read the explanations for your mistakes.
